Principal's Update

End of Term 2

As Term 2 draws to an end I would like to thank all those who have worked tirelessly throughout the term. Just in the last two weeks alone, on top of our excellent learning and assessment program, I look at the success of our Year 11 Creative Arts Night, the Walk for Domestic Violence, multiple sporting successes for MacKillop teams and individuals, Kids Lit Quiz, French Degustation lunches, Pathways to University Information Night, Year 7 2023 Offers of Enrolment, Year 11 Geography Cairns excursion, Year 10 RESPECT Day, guest presenters across subjects, Street Retreat, the HSC student visit to Newcastle Open Day and so much more. 

Both students and staff have endured a challenging term as the first real winter in three years brought with it significant sickness. To the MacKillop staff, you have gone above and beyond, picking up the workload, classes and marking of peers and colleagues who were unwell just to ensure the continuity of learning for students. A real challenge in an already frantically busy workplace. 

Unfortunately I was one of those who did not make it through the term, testing positive on Monday for COVID-19. This meant I missed today’s Award Ceremonies, however I read the following Awards results which can be found in the Year Reports of today's newsletter, with a very big smile and sense of pride in the efforts and achievements of so many MacKillop students. Congratulations to all award recipients. I wish all staff, students and families a restful and healthy break and look forward to seeing you all in Term 3.

Farewell Miss Jessica Prussing

Today we bid farewell to the College Leader of Learning Support: Diversity and Inclusion. Jess had resigned from her leadership and teaching position at the College to pursue studies in counselling. 

Jess has been an outstanding advocate for the young people at MacKillop with Additional Needs. Having moved to MacKillop after working at ASPECT, Jess brought with her extensive knowledge and understanding of the diverse learning needs of students. She was also a highly valued, and much-loved, member of the Religion teaching team. 

We thank Jess for the tireless work she has done in her three years at the College and wish her all the best in the next phase of her career. 

The College is currently advertising and will inform parents once the recruitment process has been completed.

Walk the Walk for Domestic Violence Awareness

Congratulations to Nicole Bailey and the College Legal Studies students who led the College community in raising funds and awareness for local Domestic Violence Support agencies.

Kids Lit Quiz

The Kids Lit Quiz is a worldwide annual literature quiz for students aged 10 -13. Last week MacKillop College hosted the Mid North Coast heat, with teams answering 100 questions, divided into 10 categories, on children’s literature. It was a tough competition as all the teams knew their stories and characters and the last round was tense.

MacKillop Team 1 won the heat and will now go on to compete at the next level.

Celebration of Excellence 2022 Award Sponsorship

Another year is fast approaching its end for our 2022 HSC students and we are preparing for our Celebration of Excellence which is scheduled for September. 

Students who have excelled in academic and cultural areas receive a trophy or gift voucher as a symbol of their involvement and achievement in a particular area.  Each award sponsorship is $50. An invoice can be provided and sponsors are acknowledged on our official program as well as in the College newsletter.

We would like to give any businesses or families the opportunity to sponsor one of the Major Awards given to our HSC students during this event, celebrating their many achievements.

Survey - Term 3

In the coming weeks we will be inviting students, teachers and parents to provide feedback on their experience of our school using an online survey. The surveys are an important part of our whole school evaluation and planning process. The survey will begin on August 1 and close on August 31.

We would like to invite you to complete the Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Partners in Learning survey. As we value the role of parents and carers within our school community we would greatly appreciate your feedback. The information you provide will be used to maintain our commitment to working together in partnership to further improve student learning and wellbeing at MacKillop College.

The survey is anonymous and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. You will be able to access the parent survey on your computer or mobile device. Links to the survey will be emailed out during Week 3.

Street Retreat

Faith without good works is dead (James 2:14)

Coinciding with International Refugee week each year is the Lismore Diocese Street Retreat. Students from each of the ten diocesan secondary schools are invited to apply to participate in this retreat. Only six students are accepted per school.

Students travel to Brisbane, live in hostel accommodation and across a period of four days observe the works of organisations dedicated to serving the homeless. In most instances students actively participate in these works. One of the most important and connecting works of the students is to engage in conversations with the guests of the various organisations. 

The key purpose of the retreat is to build a sense of community and respect among all gathered. Many of the people being served are often looked down upon by the general public and are often scared, isolated and alone. Our young people were learning first hand what it means to be the face of a generous and all loving God. The student’s role was simple, yet profound: sit with the person, listen to their story, be there as a friend.

I believe that the students from MacKillop College participating in this retreat experienced their own hearts opening to compassion and service. I hope that they have been inspired to value serving those of our brothers and sisters who have been marginalised. Congratulations to Johnathon Cains, Bella Castiglioni, Jaz Letchford, Hugh Murphy, Callum Pender-Buchan and Georgia Ryan.

Semester 1 Reports

Half yearly student reports will be distributed via the online Parent Portal today. We would like all parents to be aware of how to register for, and access the online portal. Please click here for instructions.

Minimum Standards Test

Next term all Year 10 students will begin working through the Minimum Standards Tests. All students will need a working device and headphones for the following tests

Week 1: Wednesday 20 July

• Period 2: Numeracy
• Period 5: Writing

Week 4: Wednesday 10 August

• Period 1 or Period 3 - Reading

It is important that students perform to the best of their ability and if they are absent on the day of the task they will be required to do a catch-up test.

All My Own Work (AMOW)

Last week all of Year 10 completed an online module called AMOW. All students who did not finish or were absent will be required to complete this during a scheduled lesson.

Year 11 Information Night 2023

Next term all Year 10 students and parents are invited to attend an information evening to discuss subject selection and the process for enrolment for Year 11 on Wednesday, 27 July. All parents have been emailed a link to register for the event.

Year 7

End of Semester

We have reached another milestone - congratulations students and families on completing Semester 1 of secondary school! It has been a great term, with students using their gifts and talents to highlight their strengths and potential in the classroom, sporting arena, community and extra curricula activities. Transitioning to high school is an achievement of which to be proud. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all carers for your ongoing support and all staff for your tireless dedication to the learning and wellbeing of the young people in our care.

College reports are published today, and as was evidenced by our many, many award recipients at our ceremony this morning, Year 7 have worked to the best of their abilities in their first semester overall. Well done! Please sit and talk to your child over the holidays about their assessment results and approaches to learning identified in their half-yearly report. Help them recognise what they are doing well and what they could do to improve or develop; ask them what they are proud to have achieved academically and socially. Semester Two is a fresh opportunity to improve upon these achievements, no matter what they are. 

Our young people are tired and ready for a well-deserved break. On behalf of the Year 7 Pastoral Team, I hope that each student and family remains safe and well with time to rest and have fun during the next two weeks.

End of Semester

Halfway through the year. Where has the time gone!  It has been a great semester; Year 8, you should be proud of yourself. For some students Semester 2 brings an opportunity to start afresh. Have they used their time at MacKillop College effectively and are they proud of what they have achieved academically, socially and spiritually? I encourage students to look over their half yearly report and their assessment results and see if there are any areas for improvement or development.

Students and teachers alike are ready for a well-deserved break. On behalf of the Year 8 Pastoral Care team, I wish all students and staff a relaxing break.

Smashed

On Tuesday, 21 June the Year 8 cohort had the opportunity to be involved in the Smashed presentation. The Smashed presentations enabled students to observe, explore and reflect on vital underage drinking themes including:

• the social and emotional causes;
• the impact on young lives;
• social influence and decision making; and
• where and how to help yourself and others.

There were many examples for students to consider and a number of interactive scenarios as stimulus and prompts for the learning of this topic. It was a great presentation and equipped the students with skills and confidence to make better choices and develop a responsible attitude to alcohol.

Connect and Belong Day

Friday Week 8, Year 9 took part in their Connect and Belong Day. This is an integral part of our Catholic Education and Faith Formation. The day focused on Stewardship, Kindness, Building Relationships and Gratitude. The students were involved in many group activities, self-reflections and moments of individual meditation. Year 9 students learnt the importance of forgiveness, building empathy and giving thanks in all circumstances. We look forward to the continuation of these themes in our Year 10 Retreat 2023.

The transition to senior schooling can be very challenging and it is a testament to all the hard work our students have put into their studies this semester. Night of the Stars

Last Wednesday night our Year 11 Creative Arts students wowed us with their amazing talents at the Night of the Stars. Students currently studying Music, Dance, Drama and Art were showcasing their talents. It was wonderful to see the depth of talent we have at MacKillop College and I was so impressed by their incredible passion and dedication to their craft.

Hospitality

Year 11 Hospitality students are continuing with the work placement program in the St Agnes' Food Services Production Kitchen. This is a mandatory part of the Hospitality course where students experience working in the hospitality industry and are able to practice skills working alongside qualified chef’s.

Students assisted with the catering for the 260 plus meals/day for the Catholic Care of the Aged patrons. Thank you to Ken Selway, Food Services Manager for providing our students with such an opportunity. In particular, a huge thank you to the Production Kitchen chef’s for taking students under their wing during the placement. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful collaboration where students can learn directly from experiences in the work place.

Push Up Challenge - Mental Health Awareness

As part of our push up challenge, Years 11 and 12 shared a breakfast together, checked in on one another and did some push ups for good measure! This was with the aim of raising awareness of and lowering the stigma around mental health. A worthy cause and a great morning! As one of the signs in the photo’s read… Its Ok to not be OK!

Pathways to University Night

Thanks to all the parents who made it to this night. A big thanks to Jo Pilgrim who facilitated the evening and gave the advice that parents needed to support their students on their path to university.

Trial HSC - Week 3 Term 3, 1 - 15 August

The Trial HSC is often described as being harder than the HSC. This is because students are still in the middle of learning the content and they need to study for a series of 3 hour exams. This will be the first time they sit an exam of this nature and rigor.

Year 12 Term 3 Assessment Calendar

A more specific timetable with times and venues will be available next term.

It is imperative that students are well prepared and that they use these holidays to study. Most subjects will allocate holiday homework which will be continuing with the curriculum as well as study which is to prepare for the trials.

I suggest that the students make a plan. The best is to do a little bit each day. Make a list and tick it off so that they feel a sense of achievement as they move through the list. Obviously plans need to be different for everyone depending on their family’s needs and their other responsibilities. It is important to work the fun stuff into the plan as well. We are always happier to do the hard yards when we fill our buckets with the good stuff too!

I have shared my advice with the students this week and I hope that their families can help support them and bring the plan to fruition.

Wellbeing

Working restoratively @ MacKillop College

It’s been great to have so many conversations with people about the Restorative Practices approach we are implementing at MacKillop College.

In a nutshell, Restorative Practices are about helping your children to grow into responsible and empathic young people who can work effectively with others. 

Given that it’s far more effective if we tackle that task with the support of our parents, I’d like to give you a glimpse of the things you would notice in a restorative school that might be different to what we experienced when we were kids:

There’s a lot more to it, but this is a great place to start in understanding why your child may come home saying they experienced some of the practices outlined above.

Walk the Walk

Giving is known to have positive impacts on our physical and mental health and our MacKillop community certainly embraced this opportunity last Friday.

Our school community participated in the "Walk the Walk' fundraising day, raising money and awareness for domestic abuse survivors in Port Macquarie. The day was an outstanding success thanks to the organisation and leadership of our Year 12 Legal Studies students.

Thank you to our wonderful Year 7-12 students who supported the day, wearing white, donating a gold coin, purchasing morning tea and participating in the awareness walk. The Legal students will continue to fundraise over the next few months with all funds raised going directly to our local Liberty services and WDVCAS.

Assembly Performance

Vocalists from the Musical Theatre Company performed at assembly last week a rendition of ‘Six’ from the musical Six. All in the group performed with energy and confidence and are now working to put together a live musical theatre performance staged here at MacKillop in the theatre in Term 4. Thank you to the students and to their director Samantha Adams for the commitment to rehearsal and performance throughout the semester.

Ride the Wave Festival

Congratulations to all members of the SAPSS Senior Drumline who performed at Town Beach (literally on the beach) on Saturday, 25 June as part of the annual Ride the Wave Festival in Port Macquarie. This ensemble continues to dazzle all in the audience with their precision and energy!

Pre-events: Athletics Carnival

The schedule for the pre-events for the Athletics Carnival is below. If you have signed up please ensure that you attend the event as per the program. 

Term 3 Week 1: Tuesday, 19 July

Period 1 & 2 - 400m; Period 3 & 4 -  800m

Term 3 Week 2: Tuesday, 26 July

Period 1 & 2 - 1500m: 9.00am 16, 17, 18 Girls; 9.30am 16, 17, 18 Boys; 10am 12, 13, 14, 15 Girls; 10.30am 12, 13, 14, 15 Boys.

Period 3, 4, 5 – High Jump: 11.35am 12-13 Boys; 12.00pm 12-13 Girls; 12.30pm 14-15 Boys; 1.00pm 14-15 Girls; 1.30pm 16-18 Boys; 2.00pm 16-18 Girls.

If students wish to do the fosbury flop in the high jump parents MUST fill out the parental permission form found at the Sports notice boards, and hand it back to Erin Denham.

Term 3 Sport 2022

Please refer to the College website for the Sport Programs for Year 7-10 Term 3 Sport.

Year 7 will go offsite to participate in a Tennis Program hosted by five coaches from Goodwin Tennis at Westport Tennis Courts. All equipment is provided.

Year 8 will complete a combination of Rock Climbing, Planet X and Hydro Golf for the first three weeks and a mini round robin of volleyball and soccer in the remaining two weeks.

Students will be emailed these programs.

Year 9 and 10 students completed their sport selections in Week 7 for Term 3 Sport. These selections have been emailed to students.

Katrina Fanning Cup U14 Girls Rugby League

Wednesday, 15 June Mackillop College competed in the Katrina Fanning Cup. This competition hosted teams within the Port Macquarie and Manning areas. MacKillop Under 14’s team played three round games against St Paul’s Kempsey, St Joseph’s Regional College and Melville High School. The girls demonstrated their impressive skills with a number of students who hadn’t played rugby league before but had experience in touch football, league tag, soccer and rugby union. They managed to have three strong convincing wins with no tries scored against them in all three games. They now qualify for the next level in Coffs Harbour in Term 3.

Game 1 – MacKillop 28 defeated St Pauls 0 – Tries to Jasmine, Lily, Arliah, Sehtaya and Darcie 

Game 2 – MacKillop 24 defeated St Joseph’s 0 – Tries to Sehtaya, Milla, Arliah, Evie and Darcie

Game 3 – MacKillop 22 defeated Melville 0 – Tries to Arliah (x3) and Milla (x2)

Katrina Fanning Cup U16 Girls Rugby league

The Under 16 Girls Rugby League team contested the Katrina Fanning Cup local competition with conviction. We played Camden Haven in game 1 coming away with a 36-0 victory with Tess McWilliams, Briana Anderson, Ruby O'Bryan, Penny Sprague, Angele Field and Andie McGrath all crossing the line.  Charlee Bailey and Lani Logan-Pye showed talent off the boot kicking many of the conversions. 

St Paul's Kempsey put up more of a fight challenging our girls in defence. Tess McWilliams, Charlotte Simpson, Maddie Cottrell-Dormer, Zoe Stansfield and Sophie Folkes hit the ball up through the middle gaining valuable meters for our backs in Charlee, Niah Evans, Evie Barnaby, Jenna Bryan and Evie Washington to find some room out wide. The defence of Penny Sprague, Angele Field and Niah Evans was impressive keeping the score line to 20-14 win. 

Our third game was against our sister school St Joseph's Regional College. This game was always going to be our toughest match of the day as Regional had size and a quick backline. Angele scored a try early putting us in a good position. Regional hit back with two tries leaving everyone on tenterhooks. The experience of Tess, Penny, Angele and Briana ensured the girls maintained their composure with Maddie crossing the line to take some pressure off. Thankfully Charlee aka golden boot was on fire and converted both of our tries winning 12-8.

Our final game against Melville was probably not our best but nonetheless we came away with a win 18-10. The game was in the balance until half way through the second half with Tess, Lani and Briana (2) all scoring tries. Congratulations to Tess McWilliams who was named Most Valuable Player.

I was super impressed by the girls’ level of skill, composure and passion throughout the day. The team now travels to Coffs Harbour early next term to contest the Regional Finals.

Country Cup Regional Finals - U18 Rugby League

The Under 18 boys took to the field again in the Country Cup Regional Finals held at Wood Street in perfect conditions for Football.

The boys played their first two games with confidence. Game 1 against Newman Senior College (22-0) saw Braydan Lang, Ethan Tombs and Hudson Harmer (2) all crossing the try line off the back of our forward pack gaining valuable field position. Wil Rosenbaum, Mark Norris and Harper Murray were great in defence causing the opposition to turn over the ball on several occasions.

Game 2 against St Clare's Taree saw the boys notch up their second win of the day with Ethan Clarke, Tom Hart and Kaden Von Bun toiling hard through the ruck with Braydan scoring early on. Hudson bagged himself a hatrick off the back of some great ball movement through Ethan and Tana Marino. Ethan Tombs and Evan Lipovac converted several goals finishing with a (24-8) win. Noah Thick, Will Heeney and Jacob Cooper played great support roles, often injecting themselves into the game when others needed a break. 

Game 3 against Melville High School was always going to be our toughest match. Melville came out firing and instantly put our boys on the back foot. Unfortunately, we turned over possession five times in the first ten minutes opening the door for Melville. Josh Power scored a well-deserved try, however the game was out of reach going down 12-4. Special mention to Hudson and Josh who led the boys admirably in each game and to Josh on being named Most Valuable Player. Josh worked hard every game with no breaks - his tackle rate was high and consistently advanced the ball over the advantage line every time he took a hit up. I am extremely proud of the boys' effort, skill and sportsmanship. They represented our School with pride. 

Thank you to the Under 13 boys who helped run water for the team.

Country Cup Regional Finals - U15 Rugby League

On a perfect winters day the boys played three tough games against Taree High School, South Grafton High School and Macksville High School in the regional finals of the Country Cup. 

After a tough 12 all draw in the first game the boys managed two solid wins in the next two matches. 

All forwards were outstanding with Matthew Maher and Will Oliver playing stand out roles in the team’s performances. Blake Johnston and Jake Morgan reaped the rewards of our great forward play, scoring many tries on the edges. 

Congratulations to all the boys involved in the team.

Country Cup Regional Finals - U13 Rugby League

The U13 boys Rugby League team played in the Country Cup Regional Finals on Thursday, 23 June. The boys faced some tough competition against St Joseph Regional College, John Paul College and St Clare’s High School. 

Throughout the day Mason White, Darcy Middleton and Jake Keegan put in solid defensive efforts. Jack McGrath scored the only try for the day thanks to a spectacular line break from Charlie Cameron. Despite some strong attacking plays by Eli Hudson, an intercept from Blaze Colthorpe and a talented flick pass by Peter Field, the boys were unable to progress in the competition.

A special thanks to Bailey Rowlatt, Rafferty Gordon and Archie Hawken for assisting on the day. 

The boys should be immensely proud of their achievements and sportsmanship in Rugby League this year. The team has shown considerable promise for the future.

Netball Schools Cup – 7/8 Girls Black Team

Congratulations to all the girls who played in the Year 7 and 8 MacKillop Black netball team, competing in the Netball Schools Cup.

All girls played exceptionally well, fighting hard and showing great team work in every game. I am incredibly proud of the way in which the girls represented our school showing outstanding sportsmanship throughout the day. 

Players of note were Mia Zvirzdinas and Imogen Turnbull the two were an unstoppable duo in the goal circle. Other players of note are Millie Ryan and Charlotte Weatherley.  Isobel Galvin was the most versatile player who played in goal shooting, defence and centre court when required of her. 

Well done to all of the girls in the team, thank you for making it such a great day. 

MacKillop Black consisted of: Isobel Galvin, Miceala Mitchell, Milla Pieren, Mylee Roach, Millie Ryan, Imogen Turnbull, Charlotte Weatherley and Mia Zvirzdinas.

Fast 5 Netball

Last Wednesday the senior students participated in the mixed Fast Five competition. We entered in three teams and were quite successful on the day with a 2nd and 3rd in one pool, and a 2nd in the other.  One of our teams, Team Black, was equal first until the final game. It was an excellent day, and it is quickly becoming the day to look forward to most on our sporting calendar. 

Mixing the netball knowledge and technical play of the girls with the height and athleticism of the boys is really quite amazing to watch.  The defensive strength of players such as Cassidy, Molly and Fleur and the attacking skill of Katie and Georgia is just beautiful and then add in our boys who can pick the ball out of the air mid shot (Will) or get an intercept off someone who is 6 foot 7 (Hudson) then you have some pretty entertaining netball games.

Congratulations to our three MVPs of their respective teams:

• Josh Power - who can seemingly play anywhere and do anything.
• Hudson Harmer - who reads the game perfectly and can jump ridiculously high.
• Evan Lipovac - who is the ‘fast’ part of Fast 5, running rings around the opposition and passing the ball on before the opposition even realised he caught it.

Special mention to:

• Nic Bridle - who was at times, a one-man team, the most dramatic and involved player in the history of school netball, and
• Ash Bryant - for, hands down, the most entertaining exit from a netball court.  Ever.

Honestly all of our players could be mentioned here - they played with skill, competitiveness and fairness all day.

So thank you to all our Fast 5 netballers for a worthwhile enjoyable day.

Most importantly, however, a massive thanks to our umpires - Lane, Billie, Lara and Makayla - we could not play without you!!

Diocesan Junior Football Gala Day - BOYS

The Year 7 - 10 boys’ soccer team travelled to Coffs Harbour for the gala day. Our first game was an early kick off against St Mary’s Casino. We made a bright start and created a few early chances. A pinpoint corner from our dead ball specialist Jesse Judge was met by Lochie Jones who sent a bullet header into the back of the net to open the scoring. During the second half, St Mary’s started to put us under pressure and were rewarded with an equalizer with five minutes to go. It looked like the game was going to finish in a draw but unfortunately Patrick Green went down with a knee injury and they capitalized and scored a winner in the last minute.

The second game was against St Joseph’s Banora Point and the boys were all fired up for it. We played with a high press and Lochie Jones was rewarded with the opening goal in the first five minutes; he then converted a second after good build up play from Ethan Hatch.

The second half continued in the same vein and we created numerous chances. After being awarded a penalty, Daniel Mercer pulled rank and took the ball from Lochie Jones and calmly slotted into the corner. A mazy run and pinpoint cross from the tricky winger George Worner set up another goal for Braeden Fuller. The soring was completed by Noah Pociask after a burst forward by our captain Jarvis Lineham.

The third game was completely different. We knew that a win was required to progress against John Paul College and we had the worst possible start – conceding in the second minute. We were soundly beaten and ended up losing 5-0.

After a display of player power, Patrick Green was promoted to coach for the last game. He ripped up the playbook and decided on a new playing formation. We started very attacking and a number of defenders found themselves in advanced positions. Our centre half, Ethan Glover had numerous chances to score the first goal but lacked a bit of composure. Unfortunately, Mount St Patrick scored against the run of play to take a one goal lead into half time. The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with wave after wave of attack. Despite creating a number of chances we could not find the back of the net and conceded a late goal to lose 2-0.

Despite not progressing to the finals the boys had a great day and tried their best in every game. Jarvis Lineham and Tyler Morris were voted best and fairest for the day.

Diocesan Junior Football Gala Day - Girls

On Thursday, 9 June 16 talented young ladies travelled to Coffs Harbour to compete in the 7-9 soccer gala day.

The girls started the day strong with a convincing win over Mount St Patrick College 3-0 in game one. Game two matched us with St Paul's Kempsey, a lot of back and forth tussle, good passing and some great shots and saves but the end result was 0-0. The following game against Trinity Catholic College saw our girls step it up a level and produce great teamwork and skill; they were rewarded with a 2-0 win. Our final game against St John Paul College was our toughest of the day. Although we matched them for fitness and skill, they were able to capitalize when opportunities arose, resulting in a 2-0 loss.

The girls performed well on the day and displayed a high level of skill, teamwork, fitness and most importantly had fun while playing a sport they all love.

Best and fairest voted by the girls was awarded to Abby Buttsworth.

Diocesan Open Boys Football – Lismore V Armidale

A strong effort from the boys, recording a comfortable 4-1 win over O'Connor Catholic College, Armidale. MacKillop established an ascendency early, only lacking a goal to reflect their dominance.

About 20 minutes in, the goal finally did come thanks to Jack Page and was closely followed by goals to Taye Power-O'Toole and Angus Goodman, putting the team in a well-earned 3 nil position at the break. Taking the foot off the accelerator a little bit in the second half, MacKillop nonetheless found a fourth goal, thanks again to Jack Page, and cruised to an easy victory and on to the next round.

CCC Basketball Open Boys

The Open Boys basketball team competed in the recent NSW CCC Championships here in Port Macquarie. The boys started the tournament with a close loss to St Francis Xavier College Newcastle. Our next game saw us up against Marcellin College, Randwick. In an evenly matched game, Marcellin ran out winners in another close loss. Our final game of the first day saw us up against Edmund Rice College, Wollongong. The team from Wollongong proved too strong, running out winners.

Our first game of the second day saw us up against McCarthy College, Tamworth. A much improved performance saw the MacKillop boys run out winners. This gave the boys some confidence going into their final game of the tournament, undefeated and multiple NSWCCC winners, St Dominic’s College, Kingswood. The boys played their best game of the tournament, out winners by 5 points. St Dominic’s went on to finish as runners up for the tournament. 

Well done to all the boys on a good effort throughout the year. The team included Caleb Prior, Hugh Turnbull, Logan Myers, Jack Kirkby, Joshua Power, Ashton Scott, William Pamplin, Jesse Blain and Toby Harper.

Representative Sport

NSWCCC Hockey

Congratulations to the the following students that travelled to Bathurst to trial for the NSWCCC Hockey teams in their respective age groups in very trying conditions; James Ferguson, Zara Ferguson, Charlie Ford, Lily Rowlatt, Samantha Thresher, Dominica Toohey and Tobias Toohey.

Special mention to Charlie Ford who is pursuing the pathway as a student umpire and to Zara, Dominica, Sam, James and Tobias who have all been named in the NSWCCC Hockey Teams for their age group. It is exciting to see so many of our students making these teams demonstrating the depth of talent.

NSWCCC Rugby Union

Congratulations to Tess McWilliams (Rugby 7s),  Mosese Fineganafo, Cayden Briscoe and Joe Post who have recently finished representing their respective NSWCCC Rugby Union teams. This entailed travelling to Sydney on several occassions to play against CHS and CIS. The boys also had the opportunity to go into camp providing further opportunity to hone their Rugby skills. 

Special congratulations to Cayden Briscoe who has been named in the NSW All Schools Rugby Union team. We are extremely proud of the efforts of Tess and the boys. Well done.

Community Sport

Congratulations to Jacob Cooper (Year 10), Rhys Evans (Year 7) and Albie Watson (Year 7)  who competed at the Ride the Wave Skate and Scooter competition held at Town Beach Skate Park last weekend. It was fantastic to see our students doing so well in front of a home crowd. Rhys was successful, winning 1st place in the Under 16’s street comp and 1^st place in the Best Trick (against the entire registered field) doing a Tres Flip down the five stairs. Not bad for a 13 year old.

Albie Watson was successful in winning 1^st place in the Scooter competition. Jacob Cooper (Year 10) finished in 2^nd place behind Rhys in the under 16’s Street Skate division. Well done boys - your skill, talent and no fear is inspiring. 

If your child has achieved outstanding sporting results in their community sport, we would love to hear about it. Please email myself, or your child’s respective Leader of Pastoral Care, so we can acknowledge these achievements.
