Mother’s Day

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all mums, step-mums, grandmothers and those who fulfill the important and loving role of a mother, a very Happy Mother’s Day. May your children spoil you just a little. On behalf of the MacKillop community thank you for all you do for your children and for your unconditional love. May God guide you and Bless you always. To those who have lost their mum, a special prayer for you and for your mum as she watches over you from above.

Yr 7 2023 Information and Open Night Success

Last Monday evening the MacKillop College students, staff and parents showed off not just what a wonderful learning environment we have but what an awesome community of people we are so fortunate to be a part of. All staff, over 150 students and a group of parents worked together to give prospective Year 6 students and their families an insight into our great school. Thank you to all those who made the evening such a success. 

To families who have a child in Year 6, or who know families who may wish to attend MacKillop College in 2023, please ensure applications have been submitted and interviews booked asap so as not to miss out on an Offer of Enrolment. Interviews will be taking place over the next two weeks.

COVID Term 2 Guidelines

Close Contacts Attending School

As previously communicated, students and staff who are close contacts and have no symptoms can
continue to attend school if they follow the guidelines below:
● They must notify the school and their outside of school hours care (OOSHC) provider if they are
intending to return under this provision.
● They should conduct a daily rapid antigen test (RAT) and return a negative result each morning
before attending school, for 5 school days.

For Positive COVID-19 Cases
If there is a positive case in school, staff and students can continue to attend school in line with NSW
Health advice.

If a student or staff member receives a positive RAT test, they need to:
● Record the positive RAT result through the Service NSW website or Service NSW app – please add
details of your child’s school or early childhood education centre when prompted.
● Notify the school of the positive RAT or PCR test result as soon as possible.
● Follow NSW Health advice to isolate for 7 days.

Enrichment 

At our recent assembly, our Leader of Enrichment Mandy Palin spoke of the wonderful array of academic enrichment opportunities for MacKillop students. Mandy Palin has led the enrichment program at the College for many years and has guided High Potential Learners and students with interest and talents in various fields to amazing success. Being crowned last year’s International Tournament of Minds Champion School was just one of many successes. Below is just a snapshot of some of the opportunities available to MacKillop students. Ironman

In addition to the awesome example of school pride and spirit displayed at our Information Evening this week I also had the privilege of spending most of Sunday, between 6am and 6pm, with over 90 Year 7-12 students who volunteered to work on the IRONMAN Aid Station on Matthew Flinders Drive.  Athletes, community members and Ironman officials have all contacted me over the last few days to tell me just how amazing the MacKillop students were; friendly, encouraging, hardworking and wonderful ambassadors for the College. Another wonderful example of students embracing the notion of being of service for local community and recognising the value of such an event to our local businesses.

Student helps in surf accident rescue

Congratulations to Year 11 student Zac Snowden who, whilst surfing at Lighthouse Beach last weekend, rescued an injured surfer who had broken his back and was unable to move. 

I received a lovely letter from the Principal of SCAS, Terry Muldoon, informing me of Zac’s rescue and that the injured surfer was a SCAS teacher. Fortunately, thanks to Zac’s quick actions, the surfer will make a full recovery. Well done Zac, we are very proud of your actions and the mature and humble way in which you handled a very frightening situation.

In His Mothers Footsteps

It was a busy day in our home. But then with ten children and one on the way, every day was a bit hectic. On this particular day, however I was having trouble doing even routine chores – all because of one little boy.

Len, who was three at the time, was on my heels no matter where I went. Whenever I stopped to do something and turned back around, I would trip over him. Several times I suggested fun activities to keep him occupied. “Wouldn’t you like to play on the swing set?”, I asked him.

But he simply smiled an innocent smile and said, “Oh that’s all right Mummy. I’d rather be in here with you.” Then he continued to bounce happily along behind me.

After stepping on his toes for the fifth time, I began to lose my patience and insisted that he go outside and play with the other children. When I asked him why he was acting this way, he looked up at me with sweet green eyes and said, “Well Mummy, at Kindy, my teacher told me to walk in Jesus footsteps. But I can’t see him, so I’m walking in yours.”

I gathered Len in my arms and held him close. Tears of love and humility spilled over from the prayer that grew in my heart – a prayer of thanks for the simple, yet beautiful perspective of a three year old boy.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN Online 2022 - Year 7 and 9 only

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment of literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

In the lead up to the tests we would just appreciate your support in ensuring that Year 7 and 9 remember to:

• Completely shut down and restart their device the night before, to allow for any updates to take place on their device.
• Bring their earphones to listen to the Audio aspects of the tests. (preferably corded not wireless)
• Fully charge their device and potentially bring a charger to top up power if needed.

Our students will be sitting their NAPLAN Tests at the below times in Weeks 3, with catchup times available in Week 3 and 4.

If a student is absent for a test they will be notified with details of catchup opportunities that are available. Please note that the window to complete the Writing Tests are only the 11 and 12 of May, the other tests are available for catch ups throughout Weeks 3 and 4.

Excessive preparation for NAPLAN Online is not recommended. Students can use the public demonstration site (https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site) to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and tools available in the NAPLAN Online tests.

Year 7 - 11 Learning Conversations

On Monday, 9 May we will be holding the second of our Learning Conversations evenings in the College Hall on the junior site from 4:00pm-7:30pm for families with children in Years 7-11. Please be aware that due to Covid restrictions this may change to an online forum/Zoom, based on current advice at the time.

If this date does not suit, or your child’s teacher is not available, I encourage you to make contact (phone or email) with your child’s teachers.

As per all conversations in relation to our students’ learning, we encourage your child to also attend the evening. These interviews are one part of the very important process of our students gaining the most from their schooling, and provide an opportunity for parents and teachers to meet to ensure open and collaborative communication which assists students not only in their learning but in their growth as young men and women.

In addition to PC and class teachers, Jo Pilgrim, Leader of Careers and Pathways will also be available via the booking system.

You can now book interviews at times that suit via www.schoolinterviews.com.au and follow these simple instructions.

Year 10 Meningococcal Immunisation

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

North Coast Area Health Service are holding an Immunisation Day at MacKillop College for Year 10 students on Monday, 9 May. 

All Year 10 students will receive the following vaccine: Meningococcal ACWY.

A Parent Information Kit has been sent home with Year 10 students for this immunisation.  This kit contains a consent form, information sheet, and privacy statement that details how personal information will be collected, stored and utilised.

To consent to the immunisation of your child, parents/carers are advised to:

• Read all the information provided;
• Complete the consent form and sign;
• Return the completed consent form to the Area Health Nurse on Vaccination Day; and
• Ensure that your child eats breakfast on the day of the school immunisation clinic.

Please return the signed consent form to the Area Health Nurse on Immunisation Day.  Immunisation will not be administered to students without a signed consent form.  Verbal consent is not sufficient.

A Record of Immunisation will be provided to each student immunised.  Parents/carers should ensure that this record is kept for further reference, and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Immunisation.

Please note that MacKillop College does not keep any records of these immunisations. If you have any questions or concerns, please ring Lindsay Lucas (Public Health Unit) on 0429 046 229.

Students are asked to wear their sport uniform on Immunisation Day for ease of access of their immunisation.

Year 7

Welcome Back

A warm welcome back to Term 2 for students and families! It is wonderful to see how easily Year 7 have settled back into the routine of school glad to reconnect with their friends in the playground and be so positive about continuing their learning experiences with peers and teachers in class. 

Learning Conversations

Thank you to those families able to attend the teacher and parent learning conversations held Wednesday, 27 April and next Monday, 9 May. The opportunity to meet face to face with parents and students about individual learning offers us valuable insights as to how individuals can be supported and progress in their learning at high school. 

If any issue arises that impacts your child’s wellbeing or learning, please continue to contact your child’s PC Teacher or me via their diary or email so that we may continue to address and support them.

Our partnership, and the communication between staff and parents, remain one of the real strengths of our MacKillop College community and a key element in the success and thriving of our young people.

School Photos 

What a beautiful group of well-presented young people! Year 7’s Code of Presentation was impeccable for their formal school photo and will be an important record of their first year at high school and a cherished memory I’m sure in the future. If your child was absent today, they should wear their white uniform (and pack their sports uniform to change into if they have Sport. Friday, 20 May is when catch-up photo's will be held.

Wearing our MacKillop College uniform with pride and high standards in meeting the Code of Presentation is a daily expectation. Year 7 should only be wearing their full sports uniform on days noted on their timetable for sport and practical lessons. A few reminders to check and enforce at home to ensure a high standard of presentation is maintained:

• Sport shoes must be a lace-up jogger or cross-trainer style suitable for sport. Sport shoes must have arch and heel support. No canvas shoes, gym boots, skate shoes or other casual footwear are permitted.
• The black College jacket and/or SAPSS track pants may be worn as part of the sport uniform.
• Shoes must be plain black, polishable lace-up leather shoes. (No high tops, boots or ripple soles, skate type, buckle or open-top shoes).
• Students may wear plain sleeper earrings or studs (a maximum of two in each ear), one ring and a watch. No necklaces are allowed for junior students.
• In practical lessons or sporting activities, students are not permitted to wear a ring for safety reasons so must remove these items. Safe storage of jewellery is the student’s responsibility.
• Makeup is not permitted in Years 7-10. Artificial nails, nail polish and false eyelashes are not permitted.

An inability to wear or meet the Code of Presentation should be noted and signed in the student diary by a parent or carer as to when the issue will be amended.

Upcoming Events

Term 2 is a busy one -  here are a few dates for your calendar:

• Monday, 9 May - Year 7 Immunisation catch-ups, if your child missed their immunisation in Term 1.
• Tuesday, 10 May - Friday, May 3 - NAPLAN.

NAPLAN testing will be online so it is vital student devices are fully charged overnight. 

Year 7 will sit online tests in their PC group in the Junior College Hall. The junior Library will be the location for Special Provisions. For more information and a schedule, please refer to the NAPLAN article in this newsletter. 

We are very much looking forward to this compulsory day outside the classroom. On Tuesday, all students will travel by bus to St Agnes' Church to begin our day with a celebration of a narrated Mass.

We would love for parents and family members to join us at the Church for our Mass at 9:30am - 10:30am. 

This day is a unique opportunity for students to hear the reasoning and function of the ritual of the mass, where Catholic practices are explained by the Priest as the mass progresses. This is followed by various activities over the remainder of the day where students can actively participate in activities focused on exploring our themes of belonging and kindness in collaboration with each other.

I look forward to getting to know individuals in Year 7 more and being able to speak with parents throughout this term.

Welcome Back

Hopefully students and staff have returned restful and ready for a new term. During the break you would have had the opportunity to sit down with your child are read their Term 1 Student Learning Profile. I encourage parents/carers to have some honest conversations with their child about what their strengths are and how they can continue to build on and use these strengths to improve areas of weakness.

Learning Conversations 

Learning Conversations give parents the opportunity to speak with their child’s teachers face to face in order to find out how students are engaging in their courses and to explore their Term 1 Student Learning Profile. I would encourage all parents to take this opportunity to discuss their child’s learning opportunities during these occasions.

Service

It was wonderful to see so many of our Year 8 community gather together to serve the community and celebrate what MacKillop College is all about. Students honoured our servicemen and women at the ANZAC Day March, and generously volunteered and did a fantastic job supporting the athletes of the Ironman. The support, the atmosphere, the cheering was so uplifting and made the experience unforgettable. Great effort Year 8 and its only Week 2. Keep it up!!

Year 9

NF Awareness Month

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a set of three complex genetic conditions that cause tumours to form on nerve cells throughout the body and affects more than 10,000 people in Australia. The signs, symptoms, and management of each condition are different, as is the treatment for every individual.

Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month is held each year in May to improve understanding of the signs and symptoms of NF, to share the stories of real people affected by the condition and to educate Australians on the diagnosis and treatment.

NF occurs in 1 of every 2,500 people, affecting more than 2.5 million people around the world. So why don’t more people know about it?

Those with visible signs of NF struggle to be seen as more than just their NF, while patients whose NF is invisible struggle to make others understand.

MacKillop College has two students who have been diagnosed with NF. Emily Kirkpatrick is in Year 9 and last year we had a special assembly for her where we watched a video about her journey and I interviewed Emily in front of the year group. This year we would like to continue to raise awareness and bring NF out of the shadows. Year 10

Year 10 have a very busy term with a number of upcoming events including school photos, immunisations, the athletics carnival, a careers market and a visit to Newman Senior Technical College. Many Year students are also about to complete and/or submit their first assessments.

Also, many of our co-curricular and winter sporting events will also take place this term so students and parents need to keep an eye on the notices to ensure any sign-up opportunities are not missed.

An exciting opportunity for interested students is the Rotary Youth Exchange Program - https://ryea.org.au/ Students aged 15 to 17 years are encouraged to submit an expression of interest via the website before 20 May, 2022.

We know that too much screen time has many adverse effects on our young people. Something that might be of interest to some parents is the ability to make particular apps inaccessible for certain periods of time to allow our young people more downtime. Please see the attached instructions to turn on “downtime” on an iPhone.

Year 11

After a restful holiday I am hoping Year 11 are ready to get stuck into their studies for Term 2. Many students will be receiving their assessment results and feedback from Term 1. Self-reflection and goal setting will definitely be needed as the students move forward. I encourage all students to reflect on their approach to their studies for Term 1 and set realistic goals for Term 2. A reminder the Homework Club is a wonderful support service we offer at MacKillop College which operates every Monday - Thursday from 3:30pm - 5:00pm. 

PC Dodgeball 

Let the games begin!!!! This term Year 11 will be participating in the PC Dodgeball Competition every Friday during Lunch 1 in the Lochinvar Centre. Competition will be fierce and all students are encouraged to get involved, either through participation or by supporting their team. May the best team win!!!

Year 7 2023 Information Night

I was impressed when I saw the many Year 11 students helping at the Year 7 2023 Information Night this week. From ushers to chefs, the Year 11 group really shone. Thank you to those students who gave up their time and showed off their talents on the night.

Year 12

Welcome back to Term 2. As per usual we have hit the ground running and Year 12 are well and truly into the thick of it. After many chats with students and teachers during week one, the message I had for Year 12 was to do the little things.

Many students had not completed holiday homework and as a result were feeling overwhelmed on day one. Completing tasks each day is essential to achieving the bigger goals. I too had a lot of work to do in the holidays and unfortunately couldn't bring myself to do it during the first 10 days or so, after all the sun was shining, there were people to spend time with books to read, good movies to watch and golf to be played. However, after putting the work off for two weeks I sat myself down last weekend and smashed out all the work I had to do. It certainly isn’t a strategy I would recommend but at the end of the day, I completed the tasks and started the school term feeling on top of things AND I felt rested and my cup was full again. Students too need to realise that you can have it ALL but you MUST plan ahead and you MUST do the little things each day to help you achieve your goals

A HUGE congratulations to Mia Dawson who was appointed as a Staff member for the National Youth Science Forum for 2023. This is a great achievement and comes as a result of Mia attending the forum herself this year and going through a rigorous application process. Mia will be helping to inspire other young men and women in the area of STEM.

Congratulations also to Cayden Briscoe who was selected in the U18’s CCC Rugby Union team this week.

Congratulations to Dylan De Domizio who’s art work ‘Little Reflection’ placed second in the Canvas Momentz Photography Competition. Dylan will now have his artwork professionally printed at Canvas Momentz and will also receive a sunrise photography lesson with John Armytage Photography.

During Week 6 Year 12 will be attending a presentation at school from an organisation called You Choose. It is about Road Safety and the choices young people make. Young people can never have too much information or guidance in this area and I am hoping that the presentation will help to keep your young people safe on the roads. The cost of the presentation is $6.00 and will be billed to your child's account. Below is a little about the organisation and their presentation.

You Choose – Youth Road Safety is a highly acclaimed program, and winner of the Australian Road Safety Award for school programs. Melissa and Peter McGuiness are the founders of You Choose Road Safety and Melissa McGuiness is the presenter, she is a mother of three children, whose 18-year-old son died in a horrific car crash he caused in 2012, which also killed four innocent young people.

You Choose engages schools and organisations around Australia, sharing highly relatable, lived experiences with tens of thousands of students, teachers and parents. The program extends beyond a cautionary tale, by positively uplifting young drivers and passengers to protect their families and their communities from the preventable misery of youth road trauma. Messages are focused on love, family, and the empowerment of choice.

You Choose believes that it is important to introduce students to real-life lessons, and to a mission for change that they can take immediate personal accountability for.

You Choose – Youth Road Safety is strongly advocated by professional educators, police departments, parents, students and by numerous industry groups such as the Australian Road Safety Foundation and Youth Leadership Academy Australia.

MacKillop College Cross Country

Well the weather was finally in our favour as we hosted our annual Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday. It was so nice to see students ‘shine’ and showcase their talent and love of running. There were some notable performances from Ryan Binskin, Jasper Sumsky, Connor Haak, Lane Jordan, Maeve Kinchington, Tallara Duck and newcomers Preston Davis, Claire Morris

Congratulations to everyone that ran – there was a really nice atmosphere around the track and we wish the top six runners in each age division (and gender) all the best as they take on the track at Grafton on Friday, 20 May.

Special thanks to Noel Stevenson and Chris Gridley who always ensures our students have a fun, and safe track to run on. To Mrs Bewicke’s Year 10 PASS class for supervising the course. To Tracey Bewicke and Gretel Worner who ensured each race got off to a smooth start and recorded all of the great results and finally to our parent helpers Mel Cockshutt, Richard and Sally McGrath who happily stepped in and oversaw the action at the finish line. Your assistance was greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to Innes who were the overall Champions on the day. Innes have now won both the Swimming and Cross Country carnivals. Let’s hope the other Houses rival them in Athletics.

Representative Sport Success

Diocesan Winter Sport Trials

The following students were finally able to attend the Diocesan Winter Sport Trial for Soccer last week in Coffs Harbour; James Hindmarsh, Liam Mercer, Jack Page, Alannah Logan Pye and Grace Davies.

Congratulations to Jack Page, Alannah Logan Pye who will now represent the Lismore Diocese at the NSWCCC Soccer Championships in Sydney.

NSWCCC Rugby Union Trials

It was fantastic to see so many students trial for the NSWCCC Rugby Union teams in Sydney last week Seamus Cummins, Joe Post, Moses Fineanganofo, Josh Power, Cayden Briscoe and Tess McWilliams.

MacKillop students proved to be very successful at the trial with the following students being named in their respective NSWCCC Teams. This is an outstanding effort and we wish them all the best as they compete for the State at the next level.

Under 16 Boys – Joe Post

Registrations and Upcoming Events

All registrations for MacKillop College sport teams will be completed by students via logging into the school Moodle page. Go to the Student Links tab on the left hand side and click on the Representative Sports Registrations link. Click on the relevant sport and fill out the google form.

Students will be notified through the morning notices of when to sign up, and when trials will occur.

2. Orders can be written out at home and handed in at the canteen.

3. Download the Qkr! app and order on line.

All orders to be in by 8:30am please.

Please remind your child/children if you have ordered for them, and what their order is. 

If your child is sick and you have ordered, please phone the canteen (6583 2632) to arrange a credit. 

Please note to change your child's year group when using the QKR! app to order lunch for 2022.
