Term 3, Week 8, September 13
Principal
Wow!
Wow, the efforts and achievements of the MacKillop students in the last few weeks have been amazing. Below is just a small sample of the talents and skills that our students have showcased.
Creative Arts showcases
A real highlight of Term 3 has been the HSC Creative Arts and Technology showcases. Visual Arts, Drama, Dance, Music, Timber Technology, Design & Technology, and Textile Technology have all been showcased. It is just amazing to have watched these young people grow and develop over their six years at the college, culminating in major works and performances that are of professional quality.
Below is just one commendation received from an audience member:
Congratulations to you and your HSC CAPA students. I thoroughly enjoyed the two nights, especially seeing how much these young adults have blossomed as performers and creative artists. It is no mean feat to pull all of that work together and to manage three performance/exhibition evenings in a row. Well done, all. A big team effort.
What an amazing team performance from the students and their amazing teachers! We look forward to receiving the nominations for students’ works to be displayed at the respective exhibition nights. Already this week, our dancers, Caitlyn Pares and Indiana Power, have been nominated for CALLBACK, the highly prestigious dance exhibition.
Shine
In the spirit of faith, worship, and service, 48 students attended the SHINE celebration in Coffs Harbour. Shine brings together young people from across the Diocese to share their faith in prayer, song, and friendship. A big thank you to the staff who travelled to Coffs Harbour and to Miss Christa Morrow, who was a facilitator of this wonderful event.
TOM
A long-held tradition of the MacKillop College Enrichment programme has been students' success at the world-renowned Tournament of Minds competition. Last Sunday, two of our teams continued that success at the Regional Championships, winning the STEM and Arts divisions and qualifying for the State Championships in Sydney in two weeks. We wish the teams all the best and look forward to hearing how they go. Below is a full wrap up from Mrs Amy Ryals who leads the teams.
Mia Szumowski - Junior Australian Sanda in Brunei
Congratulations to Year 11 student Mia, who has been selected to compete in the World Junior Sanda Championships in Brunei this September. Mia has been selected to represent Australia in the three-person team and is the only female athlete amongst the trio.
Mia, who started her martial arts journey at age 2, says this prestigious event, featuring Chinese free-fighting similar to kickboxing, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a dream come true. Mia is a wonderful example to MacKillop's peers of the rewards of hard work and dedication. We look forward to hearing more about Mia’s experience on her return.
Aboriginal Education Consultative Committee (AECG) Sportsperson of the Year
Year 9 student Gem Fernando was recently selected for the North Coast Academy Indigenous Talent program. Along with a number of our talented Indigenous students, Gem attended a Talent ID Day in Coffs Harbour. After performing exceptionally well in a number of skills and drills, Gem was offered a place in the programme.
Gem has been involved in netball for numerous years at all levels. Earlier in the year, she travelled to the Gold Coast as a member of the NSW Echidnas Indigenous Schoolgirls netball team. After a thorough selection process of over 100 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, Gem was chosen to join the Australian Under 14s Budgies Indigenous School girls team to compete in New Zealand in September.
Gem was also successful in receiving the Sportsperson of the Year award at the Dungang awards ceremony for the AECG awards, which took place on August 13th.
We look forward to watching Gem continue her elite sporting journey in the years to come.
Claire Pieren
Congratulations to Year 11 student Claire Pieren, who has achieved a remarkable feat by being selected for the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Netball team. Netball has the highest female participation in any sport in NSW, so to make a representative team shows Claire’s amazing talent and dedication to being competitive at such an elite level.
Uniform and Code of Presentation Reminder
Often this time of year, students are beginning to grow out of their uniforms. Can I please ask parents to ensure students skirts (to the knee length) and shorts (mid-thigh length) meet the Code of Presntation and that school shoes are black leather lace up.

MacKillop College wins The Spirit of Wakakirri Award
“A wonderful piece of theatre showing technique, emotionally connected. A standout performance. "
- Katie Kermond, Wakakirri Ambassador
Throughout the year, a group of students in years 7, 8, 9, and 10 have been working hard to be able to participate in the National Story Dance Festival, Wakakirri. Wakakirri is an education programme for schools that develops student engagement and well-being through sharing stories and participation in the performing arts. The team has recently travelled to Sydney to perform at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts) and received a variety of awards, including:
- Storytelling Award for Story Construction and Clarity
- Ensemble Award for Dancing and Acting
- Ensemble Award for Choreography
- Production Award for Original Soundtrack
- Production Award for Projection
Our hard work truly paid off into a wonderful experience, creating new friendships and exciting memories between all members of the Wakakirri Team. Our school performed a dance about belonging named ‘Belonging Beyond the Virtual World.’ This year's Wakakirri theme was belonging, and our dance was inspired by technology and how it is taking over the lives of teens. They are starting to feel like they need technology to belong. However, this is far from the truth, and kids and teens need to know how important it is to have a sense of belonging around you, like friends and family, and start to connect more with others, beyond technology and social media, so that you can thrive in every aspect of life.
Our journey from 2022 to 2024 has been remarkable. We started with circa.14 students, and now we've grown to over 50! Along the way, we've shared countless smiles and laughs and forged new friendships. Our experience has been incredible, from arriving at school at 6 a.m. to performing at the country's largest acting school and enjoying a few Maccas and GYG stops along the way!
On behalf of the Wakakirri team, Hunter and Chloe extend our sincere appreciation to all those who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and dedication to the Wakakirri programme at Mackillop College. We would like to specifically acknowledge Ms. J. Eggert, Ms. R. Dietrich, and Miss E. Smith for their unwavering support and extensive efforts, both during our weekly sessions and behind the scenes. To Ellie Fallon and Matt King for being part of our Wakakirri support crew. Our gratitude also extends to our fantastic principal, Mrs. Eichmann, our CA Leader of Learning, Ms. North, who has also assisted with supervision and prop making, and finally our dedicated bus driver—who, given the countless hours of singing and laughter, can safely be considered a Swiftie.
Additionally, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to the families, parents, and carers whose support has been vital on our journey. Your encouragement and involvement have made a significant difference, and we are deeply grateful for your backing.

Tournament of Minds
On Sunday, September 8, I had the privilege of taking 26 delightful students to Coffs Harbour University for the TOM Regional Finals.
We had 4 teams in total, 2 x STEM and 2 x The Arts. After a rigorous 6-week training, the students were excited as we headed in the bus on a Sunday morning up to Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour. We had 2 year 7 teams and 2 Year 7/9 mixed teams. Mrs Connor and I were able to watch the Long Challenges, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing these students in their element.
The feedback given to the students by the judges was incredibly positive, and MacKillop College was mentioned multiple times by various judges as being outstanding in the calibre of performances. Our Year 7 Arts Team received honours, and we had 2 wins from the Year 7 STEM Team and our Year 7/9 Arts Teams. We head to Sydney (UNSW) in 2 weeks for the NSW State Final. We wish our teams the very best of luck. I want to thank Mrs Connor for taking time out from her family and joining us for the day in Coffs!
Congratulations to all our participants; Stephanie Banham, Evie Bullen, Paige Causley, Stella Clark, Erika Collins-Jones, Ruby Davies, Grace Gallery, Sarah Gleeson, Paige Goldie, Olivia Gridley, Anna Harmer, Lila Karam, Jemma Kowalewski, Bethany Martin, Tori McGrath, Angelina Mifsud-Scriven, Charlotte Miles, Zoe Mizzi, Kavi Mohanaranjan, Lucas Morris, Grace Pullham, Ranuki Ranasinghe, Ben Ryan, Mia Saunders, Ollie Walters and Violet Wilton.

Year 7
Respect
In our weekly year assemblies, Year 7 has been focusing on our core values here at MacKillop. In our last assembly, we looked at our very important value of respect. We discussed ‘What does respect look like at MacKillop?’ We looked at three areas of respect: to yourself, to others, and the environment. Below is a summary of what we discussed.
To Yourself
- Uniform. Wearing the correct uniform on the correct day. Making sure that the uniform is worn correctly (correct formal shorts, shoes, correct skirt length).
- Taking pride in one's work and achievements.
- Striving to do one's personal best in your classes and your behaviour.
- Advocating for one's needs in a respectful manner.
To Others
- Following directions from teachers and staff.
- Accepting consequences for misbehaviour without arguing.
- Allow others to learn without disruption.
- Using polite language like "please," "thank you," and "excuse me."
- Speaking to others (teachers, staff, peers) in a kind and courteous manner.
- Listening attentively when others are speaking.
- Avoiding hurtful or inappropriate language.
- Respecting others' personal space and belongings.
To the environment
- Treating school property and facilities with care.
- Keeping our environment clean—putting rubbish in the bin to keep your area clean.
SRC Elections
Year 7 has recently nominated and held elections for the Student Representative Council (SRC). This is a fantastic opportunity for students to take on leadership roles, voice their opinions, and contribute to our school community. In addition to the SRC elections, we recently launched our new house system, which has generated a buzz of excitement among students. Each Year 7 student now knows which house they will be a part of next year, fostering a sense of community and friendly competition. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of both the SRC and the new house system on our school spirit and student engagement.

Year 8
Year 8 Mass and Catch the Wave Day
Today, Year 8 had the opportunity to come together to celebrate a liturgy focused on our 2024 theme: finding happiness in making others happy.
During our prayer service and Catch the Wave Day, students were invited to think about how they have grown as individuals and built relationships with those around us over this year. It was a time to reflect on how our actions can make a difference in the lives of others and how they have made others happy in their day-to-day interactions.
Students were encouraged to be friends who support, advise, and stand by others, just as they would hope others would do for them; embrace the love that Jesus has for them and share it with others; and let God’s love be the guiding force in their friendships and in their lives.
The Catch the Wave Day operated as an introduction and invitation to the work of student discipleship. Young adults working in our secondary colleges as youth ministry officers facilitated the sessions. They played games, gave personal testimonies of their faith journey, and spoke of the opportunities and commitments involved in joining a ministry-focused religious education class. The metaphor of catching a wave was used for students to consider where they are currently in terms of their own faith and where they might wish to be. Thank you to all the student and teacher helpers that made the day so special.
Maintaining Standards
I want to emphasise the importance of upholding our standards across all aspects of college life as we enter the warmer months. This includes attendance, classwork, behaviour, and uniform. Students are reminded that they should only be in sport uniform if they have sport or need to for a practical subject and to wear the appropriate uniform correctly. Let’s all contribute to a respectful and disciplined environment at our college.

Year 9
The world needs us to not lose sight of our compassion and generosity or our active seeking of ways to help, make a moment meaningful and ask, “Are you really OK?”
Yesterday, Thursday, September 12, was R U OK? Day—a day dedicated to encouraging and empowering everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them by starting with the question “Are you really OK?”.
The current issues pressing Year 9 are navigating friendship shifts and being one’s authentic self when with friends.
The value of a deeper conversation is timely and worthwhile to keep in touch with what is really going on in that teenage mind.
Yet, as we all know, having a meaningful conversation with young people in high school can be trickier than when they were younger. Parenting experts suggest:
Make time and space to talk. Get comfy and sit besides them on the couch or outside, or whilst you are doing an activity such as cleaning up the kitchen or walking. Removing distractions such as phones all signal that you are present, you want to listen, and you are ‘there for them’.
Allow your child to talk and use you as a sounding board. You don't need to fix their problem or make them feel better; just listen. We all sometimes just need to'vent’, get stuff off our chests, whinge, complain, or let our family know we’ve had a bad day. We don’t need anyone to give us a solution or to ‘fix’ a problem; we just need someone to remind us that we are loved and supported. Your child needs the same opportunity; they are looking to feel loved and supported. Adult responses that encourage our young people to share:
- "That sounds tough; do you want help to find a solution or do you just need to get it off your chest?"
- "How did that make you feel?"
- "And then what happened?"
Be empathetic. Talking so young people will listen starts with understanding the situation from their point of view. Your teen is more likely to keep coming back to you to talk about things if you make it clear that you are on their side, even when they’ve made a mistake.
- "I can see why you're so frustrated, sad, annoyed."
- "How did you feel about that? Yeah, I think I would have felt like that too."
- "Why do you think (the other person) did/said that?"
Talk often. Take the opportunity to really check in with your child regularly about the little things that are going on in their life. By remaining positively engaged in their life, it will be easier to have difficult conversations when the need arises. Knowing you are ‘there for them’, to listen to, love, and support them, then they are much more likely to see you as someone to turn to first when they need help working through bigger problems. One of the joys of parenting is seeing the interesting and maturing person they are becoming.
Dad of two Paul shares how he connects with his teenage daughter Thoma and gives her support without pushing her one way or another. His main advice? Don't be a plumber or a policeman, meaning don't offer a solution or take action straight away; support your teen to figure it out and just listen. See: Reach Out: How Paul and Thoma talk about serious stuff
Learning from you about how to talk will also help your teen have a meaningful conversation (even if it is difficult) with a friend or someone they would normally see at school but haven’t heard from them. Australian parenting expert Maggie Dent offers insights about an array of concerns impacting teens.
We value the vital support of parents and carers of our young people, and PC teachers are happy to offer that same support if you feel the conversation needs to be extended.
Professional assistance can also be sought by your young person via Kids Helpline and Beyond Blue.
Code of Presentation
As the year progresses, students grow, and the weather warms up, we request parents to continue to check and support their son or daughter’s adherence to the College Code of Presentation.
Year 9 has been reminded of college expectations and requirements:
All students who belong to the MacKillop College community are to wear the college uniform with pride and at an excellent standard.
- Undershirts or singlets must not be visible.
- Sport shoes must have arch and heel support. Canvas shoes, gym boots, skate shoes, and other casual footwear are not permitted.
- Students may wear plain sleeper earrings or studs (a maximum of two in each ear), one ring, and a watch.
- Students must always be clean-shaven (medical documentation must be shared with the college for exemption).
- All students must wear a hat or cap in the sun as per normal college rules.
Sport Selections
All Year 9 students will be asked to select a sport for Term 4 this Tuesday. Please consult with your son or daughter about their choice of preferences, as many elected sports incur a cost. Sport selections are time stamped and issued accordingly. Students have been informed by Mrs. Erin Denham at our Year 9 Meeting yesterday as to the process and considerations in allocating sport selections.

Year 10
Respect Day—A HUGE SUCCESS!
I’d like to commend Year 10 students for their efforts, as their behaviour was exemplary throughout the day. The students were engaged throughout and were able to workshop key ideas within the three sessions: attitudes towards relationships, sexual violence and the law, and It’s YOUR Choice. The feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive. A huge thank you to Ms. Montgomery, Mrs. Kable, and Mr. Lorger for their organisation, and Mr. Adams, Mr. Littler, Mrs. Ryals, Mrs. Bewicke, Mr. Lorger, Mr. McRae, Mr. Kennedy, Mrs. Mann, and Ms. Montgomery for the delivery of the sessions.
Assessment Task Feedback
Students have been completing assessment tasks recently and will start to receive feedback on their work. In a recent year meeting, it was outlined how to respond to feedback appropriately, and the following points were addressed:
- Interpret the feedback; determine what the marker is commenting on.
- Analyse and apply what you have learned; apply what the marker has suggested to your next piece of work. ie: Improve sentence structure.
- Talk it out; discuss your feedback with someone else, i.e., a friend or classmate.
- It's nothing personal; it is important not to take feedback as personal criticism. Teachers mark heaps of assignments, and their end goal is not to point out your mistakes but to suggest ways to improve. Keep an open mind.
- Build on your strengths; don’t forget any positive comments made by your marker. Know your own strengths and build upon them.
Maintaining the Code of Presentation
As we approach the latter stages of the term, I’d like to remind parents and students of the Code of Presentation. There is a trend emerging whereby students are opting to wear their sports uniform when academic dress is required, and unfortunately, some students have been removed from classes as a result. Some more specific issues relating to the current trends of breaches of the Code of Presentation are outlined below:
- Girls; Acrylic Nails and Jewellery.
- Boys; Facial hair and hairstyles.

Term 4 Elective Sport Choice Year 9 & 10
Year 9 and 10 students will complete their Term 4 Elective Sport choices for Term 4 on Tuesday, 17 September (Week 9) at 8.45am.
Please discuss with your child the options and costs associated with the sport BEFORE your child makes their selection. 450 students make a selection each term, which is logistically huge. Students cannot change their sport selection once sports have been selected, so please be certain what sport your child can select.
Students will provide 4 preferences; this is a first-in, first-served scenario. Unfortunately, not all students will get their first preference, will not necessarily get into a sport with ALL of their friends, or the sport they select may not run due to low numbers.
Parents will be asked to consent and pay for their child's sport via Compass before the first Tuesday of Week 1, Term 4.

Sport Reports
Girls Rugby Union 7’s
On a scorching day in Port Macquarie, the Under 14 Girls Rugby Union 7's team from MacKillop achieved an impressive feat at the Port Macquarie Girls Secondary Schools Rugby 7’s Competition. They showcased their skills and determination, finishing the day undefeated, which secured them a place in the upcoming state finals in Sydney. The competition kicked off with a challenging match against Wauchope High. Despite the strong performance from their opponents, known for their well-drilled tactics and strength at the breakdown, the MacKillop girls quickly adapted their game plan. This strategic shift paid off, leading them to a narrow victory of 19-17.
In their second match against Saint Columba Anglican School, the MacKillop team continued to build on their momentum. With standout performances from Frankie Healey, who made impressive runs, and Shannon Lusang, who anchored the defence, the girls dominated the game, finishing with a score of 31-21. The third match against Regional College saw the MacKillop girls play fast, free-flowing rugby. They maintained control throughout the game, with strong contributions from Annabelle Wickham, Millie and Grace Byrne, Isabella Hawkins, and Zy Hogan. Captains London Curtis and Frankie Healey provided exceptional leadership, guiding their team to a commanding performance.
MacKillop faced Hastings Secondary College in the final, and after a shaky start where Hastings scored two quick tries, the MacKillop girls regained their composure and executed their game plan effectively. They fought back to win the match 21-14, demonstrating great discipline, particularly at the breakdown, and effectively controlling the game's flow. Curtis excelled in linking with the outside backs, while Healey's powerful runs up the middle were pivotal in their victory. Congratulations to the Mackillop girls on their outstanding achievement, and a heartfelt thank you to all the families who came out to support the team. Their hard work and dedication have set the stage for an exciting challenge ahead in the state finals. MVP on the day was London Curtis.

AFL Under 15’s
The junior girls played some exciting football at the Junior Schools Cup. A win against the closely matched Camden Haven team was a great way to settle the nerves and develop some good team tactics. Newcomers to the team, Frankie Healy and Lily Mosely, created some great defence with their tackling skills and long kicks to get us out of trouble. Game two against Bishop Druit was much tougher, as we came up against some great talent in a few Swans Development players. The strength in our centres saw Darcie Gleeson, Claire Morris, and Ella Oliver combine well to deliver the ball to our forwards. Amelia Williams was tactical in the forward pocket, using her agility to deliver great options to Tilly Sinclair and Gem Fernando, who were confident in their kicks. A narrow loss put us in good spirits for our game against Bellingen.
Our third game against Bellingen was close to begin with. London Curtis was tireless in defence, using her speed and strength to make some very strong tackles. Camille Hosttetler gave great direction from the back pocket and combined well with Tiannah Whelow to keep the opposition goals at bay. Tori McGrath, Abby Moloney, and Mikayla Adams made an impact on the wing with some surprising tackles and some great marks. It was Arliah Morris who shone at the end of a close game, scoring two quick goals to bring home the win. The final against Bishop Druit was tough, but our girls fought hard and kept the score close.
Bianca Harrison and Charlotte McEntyre used their ball skills and height in the ruck and the forward pocket interchangeably, while Ally Newton displayed an array of skills and adaptability to play any position in times of need. Lily Rowlett also showed her flexibility and coachability as she moved around the field and had an impact in every position. It was the multiple skills of Lily Mosely, tackling, taking marks, and kicking huge kicks to our forward line that gave us plenty of options to score. The talents of Arliah Morris and Darcie Gleeson allowed us to get on the scoreboard, along with some excellent plays by Gem Fernando and Tilly Sinclair. The never say die attitude of Claire Morris had the crowd on their feet as she made tackle after tackle. Albeit a loss in the final, the game felt like a huge success as the team worked so hard together and fared so well against a much more experienced and well-drilled team. I was very proud of the girls. AFL is an exciting sport for young girls and combines an excellent mixture of general athleticism, fitness, and specialised skills. All of the girls really enjoyed the games, and I am sure they will come together again next year in either the junior or senior MacKillop team.

Boys AFL
It was a cracking day for football at Sawtell on Tuesday, August 27, with our 7-9 boys team progressing through to the State Finals of the AFL Junior Schools Cup in Tuggerah in a series of strong performances that saw them undefeated for the day.
In a rematch of the local final to start the day, SCAS put on a spirited performance to hold us to a margin close, particularly in the first half, but our combinations out of the centre let our forwards get to work, and we ran away with the win.
Coffs Harbour High School was our next opponent and our strongest competition for the day, with a good mix of speed and strength across the ground. In a tightly contested affair, we played the vast majority of the first half in our forward line, but our inaccuracy and some 50m penalties we gave away with some of our team still learning the game saw us go into the break behind by a single point. In the second half we traded goals early but were able to again trap the ball in our forward half to seal the win.
We went into our match against St. John Paul College hungry to win and secure our place in the final. In a dominant display, our team worked really well together to ensure this happened from early on. The game was a perfect warm-up to the final against Coffs Harbour High School, where we maintained our momentum and continued to hit the ball hard, provide good options forward of the ball, and run hard to impact the ball entering our defensive line.
Congratulations to all our young men for representing themselves and the college so well on the day, and good luck at the state finals.
MVP: Shared between Oto Ryan, Nate Sheldon, and Archie Hawkins (as voted on by the team).

Netball
Congratulations to Piper Wilson, Tallara Duck, Claire Pieren, and Lily Dunshea for making it to the NSWCCC U18 Netball Selection Trials as a part of the Lismore Diocesen team. It's a testament to their hard work and skill and was an exciting opportunity for them to represent the Lismore Diocese. They all played so wonderfully on the day.
This was the first year that Lismore Diocese has taken a team to the selection to the NSWCCC Netball trials, held in Penrith on Tuesday, 27 August. Unfortunately, Tallara Duck had to withdraw from the trials due to a knee injury.
The day was a huge success for the Lismore Diocesen team! Facing fierce competition and holding their own so well was an impressive feat. Drawing with Wollongong, coming close to Parramatta and Sydney, and having such strong performances against Bathurst really shows the skill and determination of the team.
Having 6 out of 9 girls make the possible and probable list was indeed remarkable and highlights the depth of talent in the team. Congratulations to Piper Wilson and Claire Pieren for making it to the P & P—it’s a significant achievement and a testament to their hard work and skill. It was so rewarding that their performance was recognised and praised by other coaches.
Claire Pieren (Year 11) was chosen for the Under 18’s NSWCCC Netball Team. This is the second time Claire has made a NSWCCC team. This is an outstanding achievement for Claire, especially considering only 10 players were selected from the 90 who trialled.
Just outstanding results for our MacKillop girls. We are incredibly proud of you all.
Thank you to Mrs. Ryals, who was the coach of the Lismore Diocesan team. We are fortunate to have such skilled and passionate teachers at MacKillop.

Community Sport
Congratulations to Daniel Mercer and Jarvis Lineham (captain) from the U16 Mid Coast FC, who recently won the Premier Youth League Grand Final. It was a nail-biting match held in Newcastle against tough competition. Mid Coast FC scored an equaliser goal with just 1 minute left on the clock. This took them into extra time, where they scored the winning goal in the last minutes of the game. Well done, boys! What an epic finish to a great season!
If your child has achieved outstanding sporting results in their community sport, we would love to hear about it. Please email myself, or your child’s respective Leader of Pastoral Care, so we can acknowledge these achievements.
If you have any questions regarding sport at MacKillop College, please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or phone at the College.
