Principal's Update

As my first week sitting in the principal chair of MacKillop, I must especially congratulate our Year 7’s on the impressive way they have started high school. While walking a lost young lady to class the other day, I asked her how her start to high school had been. She told me that she had made a new friend and was brimming with excitement over her Science lesson, her favourite subject so far.  As a year group, they have had a very impressive start, and every time I walk through the playground, there are many “hello’s” and smiling faces, which is a delight to experience. 

We shared our Annual School Improvement Plan with all parents and students in last week's newsletter. As a school, we are working on many levels to bring this document to life, which we will share with students over the coming weeks. One of the document's strengths is that our goals have a foundation in our new College values: Faith, Respect, Excellence, Community, Compassion and Integrity. We gathered for a whole school assembly on Monday to pray and set expectations. During this assembly I took the opportunity to challenge students to bring their values to life in all that they say and do reminding them that “values are like fingerprints, we all have them.. And you leave them over everything you do”. 

We also gave a special welcome to Year 7, our new students across 8 - 11, and Year 12 as they begin the final year of schooling. In addition to the staff mentioned last week, I would also like to welcome the following new staff.

New Staff 2024

We took the opportunity to showcase our 2024 Student Representative Council through the following video.

Mrs Campbell and Mr Kelly, two of our Assistant Principals, used the opportunity to set expectations for the year ahead.

Key themes included 

• Active Learners: We demonstrate to students the importance of engaging in their learning, beginning with being “ready to learn. " Presenting to class organised and on time is our expectation and an important baseline for the lesson ahead.
• College expectations: Outline our new procedures for the building works that have occurred over the holidays and remind students of our code of presentation and mobile phone policy.

Another highlight this week was our High Achievers Assembly. Year 11 and Year 12 had the privilege of listening to some of our ex-students impart their wisdom and experience to assist our young people as they prepare for senior schooling and the HSC. All students spoke of their network of parents, teachers and friends and the importance of finding the right balance between study and life outside school. I want to thank Mrs Tracey Bewicke for chairing the assembly and for all of her work with the Class of 2023.

Year 12 also took time out this week to be future-ready and attend the University Roadshow. It was a great opportunity to show them the many pathways that they can take post-school. Thank you to Mrs Pilgrim for organising.

Our Inaugural College Mass was the perfect end to our first full week. During this celebration, we embraced our 2024 value of “Faith. " Thank you to our musicians, readers, helpers, and Mrs. Gobius for her organisation. 

Class allocation

This time of year can be a time of excitement as students find out their subjects, teachers and classes; however, for other students, it can lead to increased stress or anxiety. The struggle that can come with a new class can be a valuable and important life lesson, building new social skills, confidence and resilience. As such, it is our practice that student classes will not be changed based on friendships or teachers. If you have concerns over your child's placement, don't hesitate to contact your child's Leader of Pastoral Care or the relevant Leader of Learning.

Attendance

You will have seen in the media post covid the challenges many schools face with attendance. I encourage parents to ensure students maintain a high level of attendance (95%) to maximise learning opportunities. I also welcome your support with College events, Masses, and Sporting Carnivals, as they are compulsory school days. The learning and experiences of these days are important for individuals but are also an important part of the spirit, community, and culture of MacKillop College. Absence due to extended illness or family leave should be communicated with the College as soon as possible. 

Uniform

It is great to see that many students have used the holidays to replace old uniforms or let down the hems of skirts that have become too short as our young people grow. I want to thank parents for their support with our Code of Presentation. As always, this is an important area where we need to work in partnership to maintain a positive school environment. 

Consent for events

It has been six months since the launch of Compass processing our excursions/events. To assist parents and carers with implementing the new system, we completed follow-up emails, SMS and phone calls to ensure your child did not miss out.

However, there will no longer be any follow-up phone calls. As a courtesy, a reminder email and text will be sent before the event's due date. If consent and payment have not been made before the consent due date, your child will be unable to attend.

WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACHES

MacKillop College has two whole-school approaches, which staff use to encourage students to grow, thrive, and be responsible for their own choices and actions.

We practise a Strengths-Based Approach, which allows students to see their individual value and increases their resilience, self-confidence, and self-efficacy.

We use a Restorative Practices Approach to promote positive relationships through self-discipline and self-respect and to repair harmed or damaged relationships.

PASTORAL CARE GROUPS

Pastoral Care at MacKillop College is structured in year groups and a House System. Our House system  and their respective colours are:

Our Pastoral Care groups create a sense of belonging within the school. In these small groups and under the guidance of their Pastoral Care teacher, students forge positive relations, develop house spirit, are encouraged to be involved in college life, share their voice, and manage some of the challenges of school life together. 

WELLBEING CHECK-IN

In Pastoral Care groups, students complete a weekly Wellbeing Check–Pulse, which allows the Pastoral Team to monitor individual and whole school well-being and collect student voices on our #weThrive pillars throughout the year.

Message from Busways

Due to unforeseen delays associated with works commencing on King Creek Bridge on King Creek Rd which were scheduled to occur during the January holiday period, Port Macquarie Hastings Council are allowing bus access to resume until a revised start date of these works is determined. Therefore, commencing Monday 12^th February 2024; School Buses S414 and S499 will revert to their previous path & times that operated during Term 4 of 2023, further details are included in the attached letters.

Welcome back to all students and families for the 2024 school year!  It was great to see everyone smiling, refreshed and ready to make a great start to school as Year 8 students. I was proud to see how much more confident and relaxed returning students were after reflecting on their start this time last year. It shows the positive connections they have made with each other and the staff at MacKillop.  

Our focus for Year 8 2023 is: Find happiness in making others happy.

Year 8 will be encouraged to embrace this theme in their classes, in the playground and in their homes throughout the year, treating others how they would like to be treated.

Year 9

Welcome to 2024! I congratulate all Year 9 students on a smooth transition to Stage 5 in their first week as they navigate new group dynamics, new teachers, and new classes. I marvel at their growth over the six-week summer break, both physically and in terms of maturity.

Thank you to all the parents who took the time to have a #weThrive conversation with their child’s Pastoral Care teacher to start the year. The information shared in this meeting offers great insight into the students: their nature, goals, perceived challenges and how teachers can support them. A record of these conversations will be readily available on your child’s Learning Profile in Compass to give teachers an ‘inside knowledge’ and help them set up for success for their Stage 5 studies. 

The teachers of the Year 9 Pastoral Care team valued the exchange and are keen to support the wellbeing needs of the students in their care throughout this year. These individuals should be your first point of contact if you have any issues or concerns regarding your child throughout the year.

YEAR MEETINGS

USING COMPASS

COMPASS is the platform for College communication for staff, parents and students. Please encourage your child to view COMPASS daily in the morning to be alert to the latest and most up-to-date news and any room changes.

Under ★, there is a link to My Edval. From there, students can access and print a coloured version of their timetable. Students were emailed a web code this week to access My Edval.

SPORT

Year 10

Welcome back to all students and families for 2024. I trust you had a restful and enjoyable holiday break filled with moments of joy and rejuvenation. As we embark on a new year, it's essential to reflect on our purpose and aspirations. Our focus and guiding theme for Year 10 are encapsulated beautifully in the words of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop: "How truly wonderful are God’s ways."

During our first meeting, students were invited to delve into the significance of this quote and its relevance to their personal journey. While this reflection may have seemed straightforward amidst the leisure of the holiday period, it carries profound implications for the challenges and obstacles ahead. I encourage students to hold onto the insights gained during this exercise, drawing upon them as a source of strength and resilience during times of adversity. Let us embrace the wonder of God's ways as we navigate the year ahead, seeking growth, understanding, and grace in all we do.

General Reminders

The start of any year prompts us to remind students about the basics expected of them at school. It is a time to set standards, refresh our memories, and begin the year with the support of parents and caregivers.

Student Handbook: Please encourage students to familiarise themselves with the student handbook, which is located on Compass. It contains valuable information that is quite often referred to. 

Uniform: Students are expected to follow the Code of Presentation and wear their uniform proudly and at an excellent standard. Some items such as shoes, jewellery, make-up, hair and sport uniforms need some focus as many students are not following the Code. We can remind Year 10 that it is their responsibility to be organised for the day ahead.

Respect: The Code of Behaviour Expectations provides a clear set of behaviours expected of all to enable self and others to thrive. Please sit and read this policy with your child so the expectations are set from Day 1.

ST MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP

Year 11 students have made the most of their first week as senior students and have begun to settle into their new surroundings. I am delighted to work with Year 11 again as they complete their senior years of schooling, and I intend that your children thrive from their first day. Thank you for joining us in the #weThrive conversations. I hope you found them as valuable as we did. It was great to speak with you all and introduce you to your child’s new Pastoral Care teacher.

Last week, I spoke to Year 11 about my focus and hopes for them over the next two years. I will challenge Year 11 to “look after their future self”. This thought was born out of some comical situation at home where my wife and I would say to each other, “Are you looking after future Dan?”. Am I going to iron my shirt the night before or leave it for future Dan to rush around and do it in the morning? Am I going to start that speech for the Year 11 information night now, or leave it for Dan to worry about in the future?

Do something now that will make tomorrow better. Choose to start that assessment now. Choose to finish that homework this afternoon. Choose to go for a walk instead of staring at your phone. Choose to speak out when you are worried about someone. Choose not to get in that car with a mate who has been drinking. Choose to seek help when you do not understand something. Choose to find an answer when you have a question.

Making the right choices now will make your life better tomorrow. Your future self will thank you.

Year 11 Information Evening

As we work towards strengthening positive relationships within our school, I will see you all at the parent/student information evening on Monday, 12 February from 6:00pm – 7:00pm in the Lochinvar Centre. This is a compulsory evening so all can begin the senior years fully informed of the academic processes, practices, pastoral care strategies, and support available at MacKillop College.

At the conclusion of the evening, staff will be available to clarify any information you may have heard and answer any questions or queries.

Year 12

Welcome back to Year 12 at the start of a very exciting and busy three terms before the HSC exams begin.

At the end of a long holiday, it is often hard to get back into the swing of things. 

I am, as usual, bringing the Year 12 focus back to their goals for the future and the systems they have developed to ensure that the goals are reached.

I might remind students and parents that our College Library is open from 7:30am until 5.00pm. This is ample time for the completion of homework and study, and for many students, working hard before and after school is a wonderful system they have put in place, which leaves them plenty of time for their interests and responsibilities.

Library News

Reading and libraries go hand in hand with student success.

Our library team includes a qualified teacher librarian and wonderful library assistants. I'm often asked what a teacher librarian is. A teacher librarian holds qualifications in both teaching and librarianship, making this a unique qualification in schools. These skills combine curriculum knowledge and pedagogy with library information management knowledge and skills. 

MacKillop Library during 2024 will challenge every student to find time to enjoy reading. Find a new author or genre, discover the escapism of being involved in a great story, become friends with the characters, be creative and imagine the scene you are reading about, learn how others have overcome difficulties, fears and challenges and become empathetic to others' situations.

MacKillop Library is organised easily for students to access great resources. The fiction books are arranged according to genre. If students like adventure stories, they can find all of them shelved together in one spot. This gives the students easy access to a range of new authors. The genres include historical, sport, contemporary reality, relationships, Speculation, mystery and crime, graphic novels, Humor, and adventure. There is a section for Year 9 and 10 students where they can find books dealing with more mature themes and a diverse range of novels in the JMC for students in Years 11 and 12.

Finding the right book is critical to fostering a love of reading and connecting with the story. The library staff are highly skilled at matching books with a reader's taste and interest. The book matching service is available to all students - encourage your child to ask us for help finding the right book.

The Time magazine's best 100 young adult books list can be found here. MacKillop Library has 75 of the titles in its collection.

Consider asking your child to dedicate 30 minutes a day off screen to reading a book. If you would like to chat with me about how we can get your child reading, please feel free to get in touch.

Sport Update

SWIMMING CARNIVALS

The annual MacKillop College Swimming Carnivals are being held during Week 4. The Senior carnival is on Wednesday, 21 February, and the Junior carnival is on Thursday, 22 February. Students and families are reminded that the carnival is a compulsory school day. If your child cannot swim due to injury or illness, they must see Mrs Denham with a note explaining why they cannot participate.  Students can cheer on their House or be helpers at the Carnival if unable to participate.

• Students are allowed to wear their House colours to and from school. They are reminded to wear enclosed footwear and to bring their swimmers, rashshirts, hats, towels, and sunscreen.

• Students are to come to school and will be transported by bus to and from the pool. If students wish to be picked up from the pool, a signed and dated note from their parent/guardian must be provided to their PC teacher in the morning.

• The 100m freestyle is swum during the senior carnival; however, for the junior carnival, the 100m freestyle will start before the Carnival. Students must be at the pool at 7:45am ready for an 8:00am start. If your child wishes to participate in this event, they must register online through the school Moodle site, Student Links, Representative Sport Registrations.

Students who wish to be considered to swim the 400m freestyle at the Diocesan Swimming Championships are to submit times through the Lismore Diocese Sport website – click on the registration link. Applications close Thursday, 23 February. Submit your application to the Lismore Diocses. The Diocese will notify successful athletes.  https://sport.lism.catholic.edu.au/registration.

• Appropriate swimwear: The school has a policy on appropriate swimwear for any water activities. All students must wear a rash shirt to protect them from the sun. Girls are ONLY permitted to wear full-piece swimmers or two-piece sports swimwear. Triangle bikinis are NOT permitted – if these are the only swimmers your child has, they will be required to wear a rash shirt or t-shirt over their swimmers on the day.
• Spectators – we welcome spectators and parent helpers at our carnivals

Finally, the swimming carnivals are a highlight on our school sport calendar. This is a day where students can embrace our House spirit and get involved. We ask that students get involved in competitive or novelty events and support the House Leaders to make our carnivals fun and enjoyable.

Year 7 Term 1 2024

Year 7 students will participate in their sport double once a fortnight.  Students must come to school in their sport uniform when their timetable indicates a double sport lesson. 

From Week 2 onwards, students will need to bring to school with them their swimmers, towel, rash shirt and shorts (bike pants are acceptable) to participate in the Swim & Survive course at either the Wauchope, Kendall or Port Macquarie pool.

Year 8 Term 1 2024

Year 8 students will participate in various sports throughout the year. During Term 1, students will participate in various sports, including a specific Basketball program coached by members of the Port Macquarie Basketball Association.

Year 9 Sport Term 1 2024

Your son/daughter will participate in the Surf Survival Certificate during sport for Term 1, 2024.  This is an extension from the Swim and Survive Certificate students completed in Year 7 Sport. Aquatics is a compulsory component of the PDHPE syllabus for all Year 9 Students. No students can do Contract Sport in Terms 1 and 2.

This course will be run with Surf Life Saving NSW and the Australian Lifeguard Service, providing specialised instructors to assist our PDHPE/SPORT staff. All appropriate water safety measures will be in place to ensure the safety of our students in an open-water environment. This course caters for students of all swimming abilities and aims to improve the safety of individuals in an aquatic environment.

The Surf Survival Certificate is a national swimming and water safety program that aims to provide participants with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness so that they can participate in lifesaving operations.

Students will travel by bus to the pool or beach to complete the modules with their sport teacher.

Please ensure your child has a towel, hat, rash shirt or singlet, swimmers and shorts (bike pants are acceptable) for their swimming lessons. If your child has a wetsuit, it is recommended that the students bring this each week. 

If your child has already completed the Surf Survival Certificate with a Surf Life Saving Club at a community level, please provide Mrs Denham with a copy of this Certificate. These students will assist with Water safety each week.

If a student cannot participate due to injury, illness, or a medical condition, appropriate documentation is to be provided to Mrs Denham.

 Parents should have returned the digital permission form this week via Compass.  This is a legal requirement to take your child off-site for Sport

Year 10 Sport Term 1 2024

Year 10 students will participate in nine weeks of sport for Term 1, 2024, beginning this week.  Parents and students are reminded that it is a legal requirement that the digital permission form is completed before the student can participate in a sport, even if choosing a school sport.

Both parents and students are reminded that there will be NO changes to any sports for any reason. Businesses rely on the student numbers we provide them, and therefore, we ask that you respect this commitment by not asking for your child to change sports during the Term.

Canteen Update

To all QKR users please be vigilant when ordering. Cut off time is 8am. Orders placed after 8am are processed for the following day. QKR app will be closed for ordering from 13 December 2023.
Many orders are placed for the wrong day ensuing valuable serving time is lost looking for the order.
If your child is not at school and has ordered online please contact the school to cancel the order.

To order from the canteen:

1. Orders can be written out at the canteen (bags supplied free of charge).

2. Orders can be written out at home and handed in at the canteen.

3. Download the Qkr! app and order online.

All orders are to be in by 8:00am, please.

Please ensure when ordering online that your child year group is correct

There is hot food available over the counter to purchase, however, to avoid disappointment it is best to order.

Please remind your child/children if you have ordered for them, and what their order is. 

If your child is sick and you have ordered, please phone the canteen (6583 2632) to arrange credit. 

Please note to change your child's year group when using the QKR! app to order lunch for 2022.

Now available: Gluten-free pies $5.00 and gluten-free sausage rolls $4.00; these items must be ordered.

Canteen Help Needed

The canteen is desperately seeking volunteers for one hour per month. No cooking, cleaning or stocking is needed, just serving our lovely students. Even if you can only do one half-hour shift it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to all of our current volunteers, we appreciate your help.
